Abortion in Contentious Europe: A symposium on reproductive rights in times of European (dis)integration

Abortion

A symposium on reproductive rights in times of European (dis)integration.

In Sweden and across Europe, the debates, tensions and mobilisations around reproductive rights in general and abortion in particular have intensified during the last decade. Ranging from attempts to change legislation through various forms of disputes in courts at national and EU level, to local, national and international protests and strikes, these struggles seem to encapsulate some of the key aspects of what might be referred to as the gender politics of an increasingly contentious European project.

The conflicts surrounding reproductive rights and abortion are global, inciting intense struggles in countries such as Argentina and El Salvador.

We welcome all to a full-day symposium on this issue! Researchers from Lund University will present their ongoing work on abortion rights.

Key note speaker is renowned activist and scholar Agnieszka Graff, who will speak on the situation in Poland. Dr. Graff is a writer for several important critical outlets in Poland, such as Gazeta Wyborcza and the feminist magazine Zadra. She is also co-founder of the women's organisation 8 March Women's Coalition, an organisation that was instrumental in the protests and strikes against the Polish abortion ban.

Professor Diana Mulinari of the Department of Gender Studies will introduce the event.

Most welcome!
