“I´m so proud, I grew it myself”: Challenging cisnormative ideals of the penis through trans male embodiment

The Crip and Queer Seminar series is proud to present this lecture by Luca Tainio, adjunct lecturer in Gender Studies at Karlstad University and PhD scholar at Helsinki University.
The seminar explores the notion that the simple division between men with a penis (cis) and those without (trans) fails to capture the embodied realities of many trans men and is largely a discursive construct. Rather than defining trans men’s bodies by the absence of ’genital status reserved for cisgender men,’ it argues that the non-surgically altered trans penis should be viewed as a body-reflexive practice of masculinity and a key aspect of forming one’s trans male identity. The aim is to challenge cultural ideals and to offer a counternarrative to the cisnormative understanding of male embodiment.
The Crip & Queer Seminar series is hosted by the division of Gender Studies. During the spring term of 2025 the theme of the series is queer and trans embodiments. After the seminars, which are open to students, staff, and the general public, we serve fika in the kitchen on the fourth floor of Gamla Lungkliniken. Warmly welcome!
