Creative research methods as a way to move research participants away from individualised conceptualisations of “body image"

The Crip and Queer Seminar series is proud to present this lecture by Ella Sangmyr, a PhD Researcher in the Department for Health at University of Bath.
This seminar examines how dominant body image pedagogy often individualises young people’s concerns, reinforcing normative ideas of personal responsibility while neglecting the social and cultural factors shaping their embodiment and daily experiences. Drawing on critical feminist theory and research with girls in England and Sweden, it explores the opportunities and challenges of adopting creative, critical, and affective approaches to develop alternative pedagogies. These approaches aim to move beyond individualised views of body image, helping young people understand the structural and social conditions influencing how we perceive and feel about our bodies.
The Crip & Queer Seminar series is hosted by the division of Gender Studies. During the spring term of 2025 the theme of the series is queer and trans embodiments. After the seminars, which are open to students, staff, and the general public, after the seminar there will be fika served in the kitchen on the 4th floor. Warmly welcome!
