Queer Vietnam : An Introduction

Författare

  • Stephen Christopher
  • Helle Rydstrom

Summary, in English

Inspired by the workshop "Sacred Canopies: LGBT+, Buddhism, and Economics in Vietnam,"hosted at the University of Copenhagen in November 2023, this introduction frames the themes of the special issue. It focuses on how Vietnam's globalized market economy is shaping LGBTQI+ aspirations, mobilizations, personhoods, and spiritual experiences. It explores how the articles in this special issue shed new light on how LGBTQI+ people deal with exclusion, health issues, migration, livelihood challenges, mobilization for improved conditions, the abusive powers of biopolitics, and the potentialities of new forms of spirituality. Of particular salience is the use of long-term ethnographic fieldwork as the methodological foundation for understanding the production and practices of late-socialist queerness. We also point to some avenues for future research.
