2015-2020

Research leader of project on ‘Climate Disasters and Gendered Violence in Asia: A Study on the Vulnerability and (In)Security of Women and Girls in the Aftermath of Recent Catastrophes in Pakistan, the Philippines, and Vietnam’. Project includes Prof. C. Kinnvall and Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Dr. Huong Nguyen.

Abstract: In the aftermath of a climate catastrophe, violence against women and girls tends to increase due to lack of safety in resettlement areas and shelters, the collapse of a society’s socio-cultural infrastructure and safety systems, violence perpetrated by a partner or a relative, and the commodification of female bodies. The project unravels the complex ways in which gender and climate changes are intimately intertwined to provide critical knowledge about an urgent and understudied problem

2010-2016

Research leader of project on ‘Recognition and Homosexuality: The Socio-Cultural Status of Same-Sex Relations in India and Vietnam’. Project includes Post-Doctoral Research Fellow; P. Horton and Doctoral Cand.; M. Tonini. (Dissertation successfully defended on May 13, 2016).

Abstract: The project explores the crafting of gender and sexualities in urban Asia by comparing New Delhi and Hanoi. Focus is on the rights and experiences of same-sex people and on the ways in which the legal and educational systems in the two studied societies recognize/misrecognize gays and lesbians.

2010-2015

Research leader of project on ‘Challenged Feminism: The Women’s Union in Late-Socialist Global Vietnam’. Project included in larger research project on ‘Imagining Change: Women and the Making of Civil Societies in the Arctic Region, Asia, Latin America, and Europe’ (Lead: Prof. D. Mulinari) under the Swedish Research Council’s Civil Society Program.

Abstract: What does civil society mean in a late-socialist one-party system and how is civil society gendered? The project investigates the role of the Vietnam Women’s Union in the prevention of violence against women and children in the domestic sphere and how the Union relates to initiatives taken by indigenous NGOs to combat male abuse.

2009-2011

Research leader of Partner Driven Cooperation pilot project on ‘Social Security and the Protection of Women, Children, and ‘Marginalized Groups’ against Violence in Vietnam and Cambodia’. Project included 12 scholars from Sweden and Vietnam.

2004-2012 (Phase I & II)

Research leader of project on ‘Rural Families in Transitional Vietnam’ (Phase I & II). Vietnamese research leader Prof. T.D. Luan. Project part of research capacity building program to Vietnam (18 projects in total). ‘Rural Families’ project included about 25 scholars.
