Gender Studies Methodologies: Dangerous methodological liaisons. The statistical study of social constructions and historically changing variables.
Gender Studies Seminar Series in Methodologies is a series of webinars hosted by the Department of Gender Studies during the autumn of 2021. In this seminar, we welcome researcher Edda Manga from Mångkulturellt centrum.

Introduction to this seminar:
Races were once treated as stable and measurable empirical obejcts in the statistics of scientific racism - a kind of research that generated knowledges apt to be used in racist practices of governance such as racial hygien and colonial differentiation. How can a statistical research of racism that takes as its point of departure current understandings of race as a contextually shifting social construction be produced? Can such statistics generate useful knowledge for antiracist work? This lecture will explore the emergence of the field of knowledge of "equality data" from a governmental perspective and explain the way in which the Balingsholm model tries to mediate the tensions between the concept of race in critical racism studies and the operationalizations of race as a statistical variable.
