SUMMARY:Feminist Movements as Democratic Innovators in Times of Backlash
DESCRIPTION:Kontakt: ov_cristian.norocel@genus.lu.se\n\nGender Studies Semi
nar with Susi Meret (Aalborg University\, Denmark)Feminist Movements as De
mocratic Innovators in Times of BacklashAbstractThe presentation examines
feminist movements across Europe as sites of democratic innovation under c
onditions of democratic erosion\, drawing on the research findings of the
project FIERCE (Feminist Movements Revitalizing Democracy in Europe\, fier
ce-project.eu).&nbsp\;Feminist movements are actors that both resist anti-
gender and anti-feminist mobilizations and enact democratic norms through
prefigurative practices that reshape democratic participation\, deliberati
on\, and decision-making. The analysis identifies five forms of feminist d
emocratic innovation: advance political rights and participation\; create
subaltern counter-publics\; embed intersectional approaches\; produce femi
nist knowledge and promote forms of hybrid activism\, which combines insti
tutional and grassroots strategies with rational and affective modes of po
litical communication.&nbsp\;Overall\, the FIERCE findings show that femin
ist movements across Europe do more than reacting to anti-gender backlash.
They actively rework democratic practice by developing innovative strateg
ies that sustain and reconfigure democratic engagement under conditions of
political hostility and growing far-right activity.BioSusi Meret is Assoc
iate Professor at the Department of Society and Politics (SOCIET) at Aalbo
rg University. Her research focuses on the far right\, populism\, and chal
lenges to democratic governance in Europe\, with particular attention to g
ender and migration.Chair: Ov Cristian Norocel\, Associate Professor in Ge

The Gender Studies Seminar Series invites researchers to share their insig

engage in critical discussions about the development of gender studies as
an interdisciplinary and intersectional research field. Bringing together
scholars from various research fields and theoretical traditions\, this s
