Welcome to the
Department of Gender Studies

Gender Studies as a field of research, focuses on questions regarding power, allocation of resources and inequality and explores the social and cultural processes from a gender perspective. By developing concepts and theories Gender Studies seeks to explain people’s actions and societal conditions that (re)create inequality based in gender. New developments in postcolonial studies, masculinity studies and queer theory, as well as how gender interacts with class, sexuality, disability and ‘race’/ethnicity are central to current theoretical and analytical debates in gender studies.
Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary department in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University. We offer education from undergraduate to doctoral level. The department gives two bachelor's programmes in Gender Studies, a master’s program and a PhD program.  Additionally, the department cooperates with the Faculty of Social Science Graduate School in three international Master’s Programmes: Development Studies, Global Studies and Social Studies of Gender. Research within the department is conducted within several fields and from a variety of theoretical perspectives.
