
The minimum time needed to obtain a Ph.D. degree is four years of study.
A Ph.D programme consists of two parts: courses and thesis.
In Sweden a 'licentiate' degree equals the completion of half of the coursework, or thesis, required for a full Ph.D. It is equivalent to the MPhil of the British education system.
A Swedish Ph.D is worth 240 ECTS and a licentiate degree 120 ECTS.
A doctoral thesis must be published and publically defended.
